Background
Pessanha was born in Coimbra, Portugal, in 1867 and studied there. In the late nineteenth century, after setbacks in his studies and personal life, he set out for Macau in 1894 to teach at a government secondary school — and from then on his life was bound to the city.
Career
I. Teaching and public office in Macau (from 1894)
Pessanha arrived to teach in 1894, was appointed head of the property registry in 1900, and later served as a judge. Alongside his official posts he kept writing poetry and developed a deep interest in Chinese art and culture.
II. The collection Clepsidra
Much of Pessanha's verse circulated in scattered publications during his life; his collection Clepsidra (《漏鐘》) was gathered and published by a friend in 1920 and became one of the landmark works of Portuguese symbolist literature, with lasting influence.
Defining Moments
I. A life rooted in Macau
Unlike the many Portuguese officials who passed through briefly, Pessanha made the latter half of his life in Macau, until his death on 1 March 1926. His Macau years form a distinctive Eastern chapter in the history of Portuguese-language literature.
II. The naming of Rua de Camilo Pessanha (1926)
The Macau street formerly known as 爐石塘街 was renamed Rua de Camilo Pessanha in 1926 — the year of his death — preserving the poet's name on the city's streets.
Public Character
Pessanha is an important poet of Portuguese symbolism and a symbolic figure of the Chinese–Portuguese cultural meeting in Macau. This archive presents his life and literary standing neutrally and does not dwell on his private life.
