Hendery (Wong Kun-Hang) is a rapper born in Macau in 1999 and a member of SM Entertainment's Chinese boy group WayV and of NCT. He is widely regarded as the first Macau-born artist signed to SM Entertainment (the first K-pop idol from Macau was Alexander of U-KISS, who debuted in 2008; Hendery is the second Macau idol overall), with a high search and fan following among younger audiences — a new-generation figure in the "born in Macau, known to the world" story.

Background

Hendery was born in Macau on 28 September 1999, the youngest of four siblings with three older sisters (this family detail rests only on fan-compiled sources). During his school years he left Macau to study on the mainland — first in Foshan, Guangdong, later moving alone to Beijing to study acting. Around 2015–2016 (sources differ on the year) he was scouted on the street by an SM Entertainment talent agent — by his own account he had originally wanted to be a comedian, with no background in singing or dancing, and was positioned as a rapper only after trainee training. Born in Macau and a native Cantonese speaker, with Mandarin, English and Korean as well, his multilingual background became a distinctive feature within a multinational group.

Career

I. Trainee and SM Rookies (2016–2018)

After being scouted, Hendery joined SM Entertainment as a trainee. In July 2018 he first appeared publicly as part of the company's pre-debut trainee group SM Rookies, a prelude to his eventual debut.

II. Debut with WayV (2019)

On 17 January 2019, Hendery debuted as a rapper of WayV, SM Entertainment's China-focused Chinese boy group, with the digital album (he is commonly cited as lead/main rapper, though SM has never published official group-position designations). WayV operates under SM's sub-label Label V and is the Chinese unit within the broader NCT system. Later that year he earned a songwriting credit, co-writing the lyrics for "King of Hearts" on WayV's second EP (October 2019).
