A modern Chinese military general known for leading the Independent Regiment during the Northern Expedition and later serving as commander of the New Fourth Army. Between 1932 and 1942 he lived with his family on Avenida do Comandante Kou Ho Neng in Macau, where several of his children were born and raised. On 8 April 1946 he died in a plane crash on his way to Yan’an. His Macau home is today preserved as General Ye Ting’s Former Residence, opened to the public in May 2014.

Background

Ye Ting was born in Huiyang, Guangdong. As a young man he entered military service and received a military education. Tempered in the wars and politics of modern China, he became a general known for his daring in battle and his strict command.

Career

I. The Northern Expedition

During the Northern Expedition, Ye Ting led the Independent Regiment, becoming renowned for his courage and skill in battle, with repeated victories building his reputation.

II. Commander of the New Fourth Army (from 1937)

During the War of Resistance against Japan, Ye Ting served as commander of the New Fourth Army (established in 1937). After the South Anhui Incident of 1941, he was held captive for more than five years.

III. Later years and death (1946)

In March 1946 Ye Ting was released. On 8 April that year he died in a plane crash on his way to Yan’an, aged fifty.

Connection to Macau

Between 1932 and 1942 Ye Ting and his family lived on Avenida do Comandante Kou Ho Neng (賈伯樂提督街) in Macau. Several of his children were born and grew up there, spending much of their childhood in Macau, so the family formed deep ties with the territory. The residence, built around 1920, is today preserved as General Ye Ting’s Former Residence, restored and curated by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macau and opened to the public in May 2014 as a site commemorating his Macau years.
