Career

I. From Heshan to Macau

Born in Heshan, Guangdong in 1879, Kou Ho Neng accumulated capital in rice, real estate, and pawnbroking in early-20th-century Macau.

II. Taking the gaming concession (1937)

In 1937 his Tai Hing consortium — with partners including Fu Lo-yung — took the gaming concession from the Lou family. They modernised casino management and extended operations into Hong Kong.

III. Art collecting and philanthropy

The Kou family became a major force in Chinese art collecting and philanthropy; the Kou Ho Neng Mansion is today a protected historic building in Macau.

IV. Displaced (1962)

When the concession came up for retender in 1962, Stanley Ho's STDM consortium offered a more modern programme and displaced Tai Hing. The Kou family's gambling era ended, though its broader commercial weight continued for decades.

Contribution to Macao
