Career
Born into a branch of the Ho Tung family in Hong Kong in 1921, Stanley Ho saw his family's fortunes collapse during the war and moved to Macau as a young man, building his first stake trading kerosene and machinery. He returned to Hong Kong postwar for shipping and real estate, then shifted his focus back to Macau.
I. Winning the gaming concession (1962)
In 1962 Ho's STDM consortium displaced the Kou family's Tai Hing Company to take the Macau gambling concession, promising Western-style table games, improved security, and modern facilities.
II. Building modern Macau
From 1962 to 2002 STDM held a monopoly on Macau gaming, building landmarks like Hotel Lisboa and the Grand Lisboa and operating the TurboJET cross-border ferry and Shun Tak Centre. After concessions were opened in 2002, SJM remained one of the six licensed operators.
