A Sweden-born merchant, diplomat and historian who lived in Macau for over thirty years. As Sweden's first consul-general in China, in 1832 he wrote the first history of Macau in English — An Historical Sketch of the Portuguese Settlements in China — and was the first to refute, with documents, the claim that China had formally ceded Macau to Portugal, founding English-language historiography of Macau.

A Swede who turned from trade to scholarship and, in one English book, first told the story of Macau to the world.

Anders Ljungstedt was a Sweden-born merchant, diplomat and historian — the author of the first history of Macau in English.

Background

Anders Ljungstedt was born in Sweden in 1759. In his early years he worked as a tutor in St Petersburg, Russia, then joined the Swedish East India Company to trade in China, building a fortune along the way. Around the end of the eighteenth century he settled in Macau, beginning a bond with the small city that would last more than thirty years.

Career

I. Sweden's consul in China

Ljungstedt was appointed by the Swedish government as its first consul-general in China, based in Macau. Beyond his roles as merchant and diplomat, he devoted himself to the history of Macau and of East-West exchange, gathering Portuguese archives and documents.

II. The first history of Macau in English

In 1832 Ljungstedt published in Macau An Historical Sketch of the Portuguese Settlements in China; an expanded edition appeared in Boston in 1836. It was the first general history of Macau written in English, systematically tracing the city's founding, church and trade. Drawing on documents, he argued that China had never formally "ceded" Macau to Portugal but had allowed residence and commerce — correcting a long-standing misconception.
