Background

Cheang Pei Lok is a new-generation member of the Macau karate team's kata event and a student at the University of Macau's Faculty of Business Administration and Fok Ying Tung Pearl Jubilee College. In karate, "kata" (型) is the choreographed-form discipline; in team kata three athletes perform the same form in unison, judged on synchronisation, power and timing. The trio he forms with Kuok Kin Hang and Fong Man Hou has worked closely together in recent years.

Career

I. Team kata debut at the Asian Championships (2022)

Cheang competed in the Asian Karate Championships as a team kata member for the first time in 2022, finishing fifth and being the youngest athlete in the team event — and has since been a fixture in Macau's men's team kata.

II. Team kata silver at the Hangzhou Asian Games (2023)

At the 2023 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, Cheang partnered Kuok Kin Hang and Fong Man Hou to win men's team kata silver, adding to the Macau delegation's medal tally at those Games. The men's team kata squad — Kuok, Fong and Cheang — was subsequently awarded the Macau SAR Sports Merit Medal.

III. Gold on home soil (2025)

The 2025 15th National Games were jointly hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, with Macau staging five events including karate — see the next section.

Defining Moments

1. Home-soil team kata gold at the 2025 National Games

On 6 November 2025, Cheang and team-mates Kuok Kin Hang and Fong Man Hou won four straight rounds in the men's amateur-group team kata at the 15th National Games — beating the Beijing, Guizhou and Shandong teams — then performed the kata "Anan" (安南) to score 42.7 and defeat the Hong Kong team (40.4) for gold. It was the Macau delegation's first medal of the Games and Macau's first-ever National Games gold. Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai presented the gold medals in person, and the University of Macau issued a release congratulating its student Cheang Pei Lok for winning national honours for Macau and the university.
