Background

Kuok Kin Hang was born in Macau in 1992 and took up karate around 2005, at the age of 13, joining Macau's training squad in 2007. By his own account, when a senior team-mate could no longer train, he was groomed from 2008 as a mainstay of the team kata event. He later became one of Macau's first full-time professional athletes after the government launched its full-time athlete programme. In karate, "kata" (型) is the choreographed-form discipline — judged on power, technique and the fluency of linked movements — and stands alongside the sparring discipline "kumite" as one of the sport's two branches.
