Background
Fong Man Hou is a member of the Macau karate team's kata event and a student in Macao Polytechnic University's Bachelor of Sports Education programme. In karate, "kata" (型) is the choreographed-form discipline; in team kata three athletes perform the same form in unison, judged on synchronisation, power and timing. The trio he forms with Kuok Kin Hang and Cheang Pei Lok has worked closely together in recent years.
Career
I. A junior-grade breakthrough (2019)
Fong placed third in junior men's individual kata at the 2019 Asian Karate Championships, an early notable international result that signalled his potential in the kata discipline.
II. Team kata silver at the Hangzhou Asian Games (2023)
At the 2023 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, Fong partnered Kuok Kin Hang and Cheang Pei Lok to win men's team kata silver. The men's team kata squad — Kuok, Fong and Cheang — was subsequently awarded the Macau SAR Sports Merit Medal.
III. Gold on home soil (2025)
The 2025 15th National Games were jointly hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, with Macau staging five events including karate — see the next section.
Defining Moments
1. Home-soil team kata gold at the 2025 National Games
On 6 November 2025, Fong and team-mates Kuok Kin Hang and Cheang Pei Lok won four straight rounds in the men's amateur-group team kata at the 15th National Games — beating the Beijing, Guizhou and Shandong teams — then performed the kata "Anan" (安南) to score 42.7 and defeat the Hong Kong team (40.4) for gold. It was the Macau delegation's first medal of the Games and Macau's first-ever National Games gold. Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai presented the gold medals in person, and Macao Polytechnic University issued a release congratulating its student Fong Man Hou for bringing honour to the university and Macau.
