Background

Originally from Kaifeng in China, Jia Rui trained in wushu from a young age, specialising in the taolu (forms) events of changquan (long fist), daoshu (broadsword) and gunshu (staff). He joined the Macau, China national wushu team and became one of the most dominant taolu athletes of the 2000s and early 2010s, long anchoring Macau's pursuit of international medals.

Career

I. A fixture on the world podium

Jia Rui was a regular medallist at the World Wushu Championships: gold in gunshu and silver in daoshu at Beijing 2007; gold in daoshu at Toronto 2009; gunshu gold again at Ankara 2011; and gunshu gold once more at Kuala Lumpur 2013. The repeated world titles cemented his standing in the sport.

II. East Asian and Asian Games stages

At the 2005 East Asian Games — hosted by Macau — he won changquan gold, and repeated the feat at the 2009 Hong Kong East Asian Games. He took changquan silver at the 2006 Doha Asian Games and again at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.
