A Small City on the Podium
Macau is not a member of the International Olympic Committee and has no Olympic berth, so the Asian Games, the East Asian Games and the various World Championships are its athletes' highest stage. There, wushu has long been Macau's most competitive sport: Jia Rui took the all-round daoshu-gunshu gold at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games — Macau's first-ever Asian Games gold; became a two-time world champion in nanquan and nangun; won the women's changquan gold at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, becoming Macau's first female Asian Games gold medallist; won jianshu gold at the 2003 home World Championships, the Macau SAR's first World wushu title after the handover; won both changquan and gunshu gold at the 2023 Worlds to become a current double world champion; took the sword gold at the same 2023 Worlds and a changquan bronze at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games; and back in the 1990s, had already won Asian Games silver and World Championship gold before crossing over to the screen.
